Leo Gerard, President of the United Steelworkers, was interviewed
twice on MSNBC this week. Among other things, he gave the impression
that his union was less pleased by Trump than they had been at the time
of the USA election. He is the second Canadian to hold this position.

But I picked up on his accent in a flash and came
out with the correct diagnosis:

The giveaways were the distinctive pronunciations of "out" in words
like "about" (somewhere beween "oot"/"oat") and the long "a" vowel
sound in words like "again" (as in gained the upper hand).

In the USA, these are usually about = abowt and again = agen with
"e" as in "ten."

I am always amazed how Ontario can retain distinctive pronunciations
even though there is close proximately to the US megacenters. For
example, I've
heard this distinctive Canadian pronunciation in Vancouver, BC and
in Windsor, ON.
