One of my dermatology professors visited us in Frankfurt/M when
I was stationed in Germany.  His wife had a PhD in German and  taught
that language at UM-Minneapolis.
 
They came to Frankfurt/M after spending a week in Bavaria where
the wife had considerable trouble with the regional Bavarian dialect.
This was capped off the day before they left for the North of 
Germany by going to one of those local entertainment clubs where
there are Bavarian stand up comics and regional music.  It was  like
a foreign language for her and she understood nothing.
