We had two of our hospital staff members at the 97th General
Army Hospital in Frankfurt/M who were fluent in German.  One
was our infectious disease specialist whose parents were German
immigrants, and the other was a black pediatrician.  The latter, 
in particular, usually drew expressions of disbelief when he spoke
that language to any German nationals.
 
We had a German-American medical conference MC'd by the
infectious disease specialist who lapsed into German periodically.
 
The visiting dignitaries were amazed at his fluency, and he got a
lot of questions about how he had gotten into the US Army.
