Sheetz, as most of you may know, is a large corporate chain of gas station/convenience stores in this part of the country at least--I'm not sure where else. They have the best gas prices and made-to-order sandwiches and the usual array of other things. The one near me is clean and well-run, and the staff is always pleasant. Many of them have been there for several years. This morning as I was paying, I commented that it seemed chilly in there--it's bitterly cold outside right now. The young woman agreed and shrugged, telling me that they have no control over the heat. It's set by corporate headquarters, and they can't change it. "That's why we all wear jackets," she said. I've thought about that off and on all day, because it seems to epitomize a mentality that views employees as interchangeable parts in an enterprise that is managed from afar. This could get very complicated and long-winded, but I need to go to bed...

There's even been a change of name for the department concerned with
employee affairs. It used to be called Personnel, which has "person" at
its heart and is now called "Human Resources". This would tie in with
regarding the employees as a resource akin to the huildings, equipment, etc.
