I sold my USA car, a Dodge Dart shortly before entering the US Army
Medical Corps, and being sent to my permanent duty station at the
97th General Army Hospital, Frankfurt/Main, Germany. I ordered a
robin's-egg blue VW Squareback, and it was delivered our first week
at that duty station. The cost was something like US $1,500, and I
paid for it with money I had made "moonlighting" in two Minneapolis
hospitals during residency.

Later during that tour of duty, it became apparent with the kids that we
(my ex and I) needed a second car, and we opted for an identical
robin's-egg blue VW Squareback.

Both of these were shipped about a month before the end of the Frankfurt/M
tour and the receiving port was Calumet City at the edge of Chicago.

We bused down with kids, walked the 1.5 mile drive to the shipping office
and completed the necessary paperwork. The men in that office were
unsure about the cars duty-free status, and I had to use my best debate
technique to pull it off ( they were legally duty-free). Incidentally,
from about Van Buren south, the CTA bus was entirely filled with blacks
except for us. What a sight with my three blondes glowing in the dark.

Then the trip home with son with me and daughter with my ex. It was a
game to see who was ahead all the way, which made the nearly 300 miles
to Eau Claire, Wisconsin pass quickly.

Those were great little cars. I kept one for about ten years, and the
other
for about 15 years.

Memories of Calumet City.
