And legitimate emails from PayPal or my bank are generally proofread
and in some semblance of correct English, which the spam versions seem
unable to do. A spam PayPal email sometimes purports to be from
"Paypal," and you know the real PayPal would spell its own name
correctly. Plus the email contents are usually gibberish but sometimes
do sound scary and plausible, like my account has been closed due to a
fraud attempt. The key is not to click a link in the email but go and
sign into PayPal the usual way, outside of any link or email. And
voila, no account closure nor problem.

There's usually over 500 spam emails a month and it runs the gamut from Nigerian money schemes to all those mentioned and more - plus most have emoticons in the subject line which I find interesting as none of my legit mail ever has those.
