I forgot to mention what a good deal dental insurance is.
 
The root canal procedure price was US$ 945, of which I had a
copay of US$  334.
 
I've had the dental insurance for about ten years, but worked
thirty years at the local VAMC (yes, the one with all the bad
publicity concerning a drunk nurse).  HR should have counseled
me that this was a good deal, but did not despite its availability.
I had to discover this on my own.
