For some reason this reminded me of a couple who came to a prominent
venerable university with the intention of contributing to have a building
named for their son. The story goes that the person saddled with speaking
with them was put off by their simple, even austere clothing and concluded
they could not possible offer enough to interest the school. He told them
that the minimum for such an endeavor, adding how much it would cost to
found a school.
The two looked at each other, "Is that all it costs to found a school?"
they wondered, and then left.
The Stanfords went on to found a school in memory of their son, Leland.
This is just like the story of Jesus in the Garden or in the desert or
meeting the woman at the well. Nobody was there to record it, but it sure
makes a good story, so who cares about a little detail like historicity?
Stanford is indeed a superlative school in all respects. Nobody will
quibble with that.
