Several years ago I stopped in Atlantic City on my way back from Florida.

Figured it would be an interesting place to see, if just that one time. It
was HORRIBLE. I came away with the sense that if I were writing science
fiction (or social criticism) I'd hole up there for the duration.

It happened to be during Lent and the local Episcpal Church was across the
street from the hotel. Leaves and debris blown up against the door, metal
mesh covering all the windows and screwed on tight. No service times posted
anywhere.

I had long been a charter member of the Vera Coking Society. In case you've
forgotten, google her for the backstory. A fine illustration his
compassionate presence and sense of social justice.
