They were definitely "not your average sandwich deli".  Not your "slop together precisely what you want" sort of joint, but more specifically menu-driven.

Plus, Subway tends to aim itself more toward areas with schools.  In my case, two Subways for a neighborhood with three (3) high schools (two Catholic, and the other J Steinbeck's, no less).  Teens aren't generally haute cuisine'ers, even if they do have digital devices and plastic to buy their sandwiches with.
