You have now an option to opt out.
There are different choices.
To get a list of possible links, google:
windows 10 opt out
You will get a variety of windows. LOOK very carefully at the URL, and
give your preference to the URLs that come from Microsoft, or some other
competent source of authority.
I accidentally upgraded, and went to the recovery section of the help files
of Windows, and it gave me clear guidance how to get back to the version I
had (You should know which one it was in order to avoid it trying to return
you to a system you never had.)
I started getting the prompts again to upgrade.
I also read of people being hijacked to an upgrade, and not being sure how
to stop it.
I looked around and soon found there are ways to opt out of the upgrade.
I used one of these, and have not gotten any notices since. The world is,
as Brian said, again a safe place.
When I started reading about the lockstep upgrades, it did not sound right
to me. Surely there are people whose software can't function with a
different operating system, who for sure never want to change. There had to
be some way for them to weather this storm. And there is, as it turns out.
I expect to keep these relics a little while longer and then get new
equipment. Microsoft will have its way with me then, but the OS I get will
be a lot more stable than the new stuff coming out the door today.
Trivia question: What was the operating system in HAL?
