RIP indeed. Just listened to a brief NPR eulogy. Many aspects of his life stand out - I still remember when he went to jail when he refused to go to Vietnam after he claimed consciousness objector status having become a Muslim. The country thought it was just another stunt perhaps but it was a defining moment of his life and lifetime. This incident was not mentioned in the eulogy- perhaps perceived as a negative. 
An amazing man.

I remember, almost in visceral detail, those evenings in the mid-1970s when I'd watch the fights with my Pop in our humble living room.  I don't understand fighting as a sport, but I do understand a person who becomes an icon via decentness and admirableness as life progresses.  I think of his daughter who was on Food Network's Chopped in recent years.  Such a life.

RIP Ali.  Called the first modern sports star.  And me, no interest in sports.  But you know what?  If I remember anything from my childhood, one of those things is "rope-a-dope"!
