I don't  think so.  I recall the rate going from $2.80 to $2.40 right at 
the  beginning of the 70's.  For a few months before we decimalised the  
currency that made a US cednt the same as a UK penny. fxtop.com suggests  
it hriefly got as low as $1.57 in late 1976 before climbing back above  
$2 a couple of years later.I wouldn't mind that rate  now.

I was off on my dates, but I think correct on the low point of the 
pound sterling.  Wiki's information on the relative values has  one
pound sterling = $1.03 in March, 1985.
