RIP Lloyd Byassee, drummer.

There's big stars who leave us, and there's small stars who leave us.  And in the homey festival circuit where you get to become good friends with your idols and even eat meals and share drinks with, the loss of the little lights of the entertainment world can be even more poignant than the biggies.  Lloyd wasn't a fantastic drummer; he had a solid role to play, and he played it well:  "to make the horns sound good".  The rhythm section in a traditional jazz band is strictly a support role, and Lloyd supported the best, in the best way.

He died today, exactly eight weeks after the passing of his own dear wife.

Keep the woodblocks shiny and worn, Lloyd, just like they should be.
