I'm not actually sure just how the one is supposed to be pronounced. I mean
I sort of know, but have kind of given up on it.
As for IN-tuh-rest  versus IN-trist, I think it's just that the schwa of
the "ter" syllable has gotten so short we don't even notice it anymore,
although of course it's there, even if only for a micro-second.
One of the things about learning a language is how to throw away the
unstressed syllables properly. The over stressing is what gives the
non-native speaker away very quickly.
