In my brief teaching career I had to pay union dues even if I opted
out of joining the union. I was a bit naive about what joining a union
was for and why I'd want to be a member. My second year of teaching,
in a district with an expiring contract, I got an education on the
value of unions. Anyway, I had to pay the dues in any case. At first I
think I saw it as an unfair money grab out of an already too-small
paycheck.
