Yes, that was actually the bigger reason for asking the various bishops and standing committees to withdraw their consent. When hearing of the debacle at first, +Clay Matthews thought it was a case of a bishop elect in crisis that could be resolved. When he learned of the undisclosed bankruptcy, he changed his mind. The issue was Fr. Trache’s lack of disclosure, not the bankruptcy itself which was justified. He had run up a huge credit card debt caring for his mother and there was no other way out for him.
Over all, I and many others felt it was a case of pride catching up to him. He apparently thought that it was his destiny to be a bishop and he thought he wouldn’t get caught. He didn’t count on his wife calling +Frank Allan to tell him what he had done.
