I was always taught (as a kid, of course) that communion was withheld because a communicant should understand the difference between bread and the consecrated Host that LOOKS like bread (We didn't do wafers in my childhood parish.) .
(Don't get me started about the wide range of acceptable beliefs about the nature of Eucharist in the Episcopal Church...)
I was baptized at 11 months, confirmed at 11.5 years old (some sort of symmetry there, I suppose). I understood the difference between bread and Communion "bread" long before I was 11. I assisted as an acolyte at Holy Communion (as it was then called) a few years before I could receive. It never bothered me. It was just one more thing I couldn't do because I wasn't old enough.
