I think I've mentioned before that Monterey County's SPCA is (I believe) the only financially independent (meaning, independent of the national organisation) in the country.  Basically, lots of deep, famous pockets 'round these parts.  But special thanks goes, if you know anything about them, to Doris Day and Betty White, two of the most notorious animal lovers in the world!
