[Magdalen] elections

Conventions are so the parties can put on a big spectacle and show everyone
how wonderful they are. They made sense before the advent of primaries, but
not so much now.

We still have a Kerry/Edwards placard left over from when older son Thomas
volunteered at the Dem. Convention in Boston.

I remember what I recall as "barely live" politics. We had television and
wire services, but none of the 'live now, yesterday' we had (and have). I
remember sitting on Tony Purchase's couch while he and my dad raged on
about what a farce we had made.

My question: Why even have political conventions anymore.
