There was an article circulating on line this week to the effect that  some
researcher had proof that lettuce "felt the pain" of being cut up and  
eaten.

Lettuce, at least in a sandwich, is only there  for a cool crunch, not 
flavor.  All other lettuces are (like raw spinach)  worthy of a gas-powered leaf 
 blower.
