For years I thought the "furt" in Frankfurt/M referred to its  
fortifications 
which, into the 19th century, remained intact.  Along with  Nuremburg,
Frankfurt/M had the largest medieval quarter, and the latter had the
largest Jewish Quarter (Rothschilds).
 
The "furt" is actually a ford, a shallow place in the River Main.  
 
The present city has been so much filled in, that's hard to make out.
