I remember very well when Fidel won in Cuba. I was a freshman in high
school, taking Spanish !, and my teacher was very up on Central and South
American politics. IIRC, her fiancee was half Cuban. Anyway, she was pretty
pleased when Castro came in. I knew from my parents' point of view that
Batista was a nasty piece of work, supported by the right-wing faction of
the CIA and the Mafia. I've since read more on the subject and he was
indeed all that and more, but it's complicated, as was Fidel. Fidel himself
was mostly a socialist and would probably not have cozied up to Russia at
all, had not Eisenhower and then Kennedy been persuaded by that same
right-wing faction (damn you, John Foster and Allen Dulles!) that he was
"of of those dirty Commies!" Read Harry Truman on the subject.....in Merle
Miller's book "Plain Speaking" he had a lot to say about it, and I think he
was right.
Anyway, R.I.P. Fidel.
