The WC bit is a classic, and the art is truly in the telling.

And apropos to the wearing out story, I will be at some task my beloved
spouse has given me, and will comment, "I'm trying!" to which she
immediately replies, "Indeed you are -- dear!  Uh, bless your heart!"
