This apparently happened to the local Procathedral after the Flood
of 1972.  Floodwaters were about 15 feet deep in the church, and
only the strongly elevated upper sanctuary remained above the
waters.
 
In that upper sanctuary were a dozen elaborately carved ceremonial
chairs arranged in a semi-circle.  These all, except for two (one  each
for the procathedral dean and the bishop) were simply given to  families
who wanted them.  I've seen them in parishioners' homes where  they
are quite stunning.  It was a case of being in the right place at  the
right time.
