I am glad to see the loosening of the position on multiple
marriages.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Back in the day, a divorce for a clergyman was to ring the death-knell
for his clerical career. However, even in an old, conservative "Biretta
Belt" diocese like Eau Claire, they had loosened up that divorce
restriction. It's just that some 35 years ago when the priest wanted
a third marriage, the Diocese was not willing to go that far.
One factor for Eau Claire was the divorce not long after his consecration
of +Wantland. +Wantland submitted his resignation as bishop to the
Presiding Bishop, who refused it. He was therefore more accommodating
for divorce situations in his clergy.
