When I was a kid in Madison, WI, there was no Orthodox church of any
variety. Most of the Orthodox folks ended up in Episcopal churches around
town and many of the immigrants became faithful parishioners. I remember
particularly one family of Armenian origin who were pillars of the downtown
parish. The Greek Orthodox congregation came into being when I was in high
school. I attended the consecration service because my dad, along with a
number of other members of the Madison Philharmonic Chorus, had been asked
to be part of the choir. I was impressed by the clouds of incense....you
could hardly see anything going on for the smoke!....and of course, the
music and the pageantry. Some of the aforementioned immigrants left the
Episcopal churches they'd been attending for the Greek church.....but not
the Sergenian family! They remained Episcopalians. The rival carpet-selling
family of Armenian origin, the Gulessarians, had somehow ended up in the
big First Congregational Church, I have no idea how or why, and they stayed
there. I don't know if there are any other Orthodox churches in Madison now
but I would bet there are.
