She was interviewed not too long ago on MSNBC.  A jarring title, but absolutely true, apparently, that a "middle class" could never have been maintained in the U.S. without also the deliberate maintaining of a distinctly "lower class" (claims of a "disappearing middle class" by moderns notwithstanding).
