[Magdalen] 54 years a bishop...and counting

I didn't get that either; seems if his conscience would let him allow
other bishops to ordain women, he would ordain them as well. And he's
certainly served among ordained women; there are and have been several
at Atonement for years. All I can compare it to is the occasional
rector I've heard of who hires an associate to provide something the
rector feels incompetent or inadequate in: the example I know of (not
at our parish) is pastoral care....the rector in question felt at sea
in making hospital visits, despite having had CPE and qualified in it,
so he hired someone who was very strong and motivated in that area to
make sure it was provided. With +JWM, maybe it was something like
that: "I can't do this, but it's part of my job in this church, so
I'll make sure it's provided, if not by me."
A more cynical (but not unwarranted) view would say he's been able to
sort of have it both ways: be "Chicago's last Catholic bishop" in the
eyes of the anti-WO side of the house but still be seen as pastoring
the whole diocese. I guess that could be seen as a needed compromise
in a historically Anglo-Catholic diocese or something less positive
depending on where on the spectrum one stands.
