By coincidence, there were two Americans from Eau Claire
who resembled the persons you describe.
 
One was a banker for Deutsche Bank which is headquarters
(along with nearly all the German Banks) in Frankfurt/M, thanks
to the Rothschild family - All Frankfurters.  
 
The other married an Evangelische professor in a Freiburg im 
Breisgau seminary, and taught English there.  I knew them both
from their visits back to Eau Claire on occasion.
 
Both had been mostly gone 25 yrs.from the USA, and were loosing their
fluency in English.  There was much fumbling for  words....fascinating.
