What did the world (especially Italy) do before tomatoes?
They are insidious. It seems everything contains some
tomatoe.

The New World is the original source of
tomatoes, potatoes, and corn (to name a few) with an enormous
impact on world population.

The Germans first discovered that enemy armies couldn't/didn't
lay waste to their potato crops the way they did with wheat, there
was a tremendous population surge. Unfortunately, Ireland became
totally dependent on them.

Still, when Jacques Pepin says, "Julia (Childs) loved potatoes," they
can't be all bad. Even so, the French still love their bread.
