That's a new one for me. Prairies are vast things, IMO.

But then, this area has odd usages of words like "porch," "parkway,"
and "gangway."

Respectively, these mean an outside stairway on the back of an
apartment building, the strip of land between a sidewalk and the
street, and a passageway from the front of a building to the back to
make it unnecessary to go around the block to get to the back.
