Latest:  All diagnostic tests clean as a whistle.  My mechanic likes to photograph with his phone such things, and show me.  "Clear" "Clear" "Clear", etc.  His next educated guess, especially after hearing what kind of gas I use, was to STOP using it, and in the meantime, at least a couple fill-ups' worth of gas treatment, to see how things go.  The gas brand I was using was Rotten Robbie, of the Robinson Oil Co of California.  I thought it was nationwide, but if it is, not by much, and apparently local car specialists warn everyone away from it.  I've used it in my car the whole 10 years I've owned it, but apparently it's known for gunk buildup over time.  If this is the cause of my current troubles, my response is "I'll say!"

Hoping for the best, and if all is solved, now on to new tires.  Two tires or four?  That is the question.  Alas, poor [Yorick].
