[Magdalen] Tragedy in Charlottesville

That took place at St. Paul's Memorial in Richmond. ( the church, incidentally that recently removed much of the Confederate memorabilia from its sanctuary).
As I heard the story, black folks were being allowed to come downstairs from the slave gallery and sit with the white folks in the main nave, a change that didn't sit well with everyone.
When a black man walked up and knelt at the altar rail for communion, no one else came forward. Gen. Lee came from his seat near the back of the church and knelt next to the man.

Incidentally, Jefferson Davis was also a member of St. Paul's. Plaques honoring both men have been removed from the nave, their final destination to be determined.

I forget the particulars and the location. As for Grace’s mention of the large NC Nazi participation in the C’ville outrage, it’s difficult to be a native of NC these days. NC was once the progressive Southern state. My husband and I came to Syracuse in 1959 (he) and 1960 (I) after we married. Young people from the South in technical/scientific fields often moved to the Northeast or the West in those days because that’s where they were hired to work. Now, young people who grew up here head to the Research Triangle in NC. Anyhow, if anybody remembers the Lee communion story, please tell it.
