The unreported thing about the Oroville Dam is that, hard as it may be to accept, it's actually, more or less, functioning as it should.  Not the damaged main spillway, of course.  But the "emergency spillway" -- the hillside -- is doing exactly what it was made to do, erosion notwithstanding.  It's called, if you live downstream of the largest dam in the nation, that which is possible via how it was constructed in the first place, is always ... possible.
