There's nothing about the type of fiddler he was.  Since his playing  was
often with groups, he probably used a standard violin.
 
There is that "Hardanger" Fiddle which is constructed differently than  the
standard violin.  There was a Hardanger Fiddler active in the Upper  Midwest
when I was a child.  My mother's family related to all this because  the
family origins are SW Norway, where the Province of Hardanger is  located.
We even had some Hardanger lace, a  special type of embroidered  lace.
 
On the subject of violins, leave it to the Germans to have an actual  school
of violin making at Mittenwald, Germany (Bavaria), an attractive  small
city on the picturesque road from Garmisch-P to Innsbruck, Austria  and
the spectacular Inn Valley.
