A monstrance is essentially a bit of liturgical kit for displaying the 
consecrated host to the faithful for their adoration of Christ in the 
Blessed Sacrament. In many cases they were large and ornate to draw 
attention to that which they contain, which is relatively small and 
simple to the eye.
