Yes, it was common in the past in the Upper Midwest, including
MN.
 
My father (born 1880) was dubbed, "Cleveland" 
because my grandfather was enamored of 
President Cleveland during his first term.
 
Grandfather's approval ceased during the second
term of Cleveland, and dad's name was changed
in the family Bible to "Clive."
