Thanks to all for the happy thoughts.  The day, after all, turned out a bust, as several factors converged shortly before I was to go pick up the car rental such that I felt the best option was to simply cancel and re-schedule the appointment.  And as I already had an approved 1.5 days' worth of vacation, and I for a change have a bit of same stored up, I opted to just stay home for a much-needed break.
