[Magdalen] Brother headed for ordination

When I was in seminary the Diocese didn’t guarantee a position after graduation, and we always had a large group going in. The assumption was that there would always be enough open positions when we graduated, and we weren’t released to look elsewhere until it became clear there weren’t going to be. Of course, that sometimes made it late for people to look.
Once in awhile the bishop would make an exception. I wantede a ministry in Appalachia, and the bishop in the Diocese of SW Virginia wanted me, so I had permission to look there, but nowhere else. As it turned out, I didn’t have a call until about six weeks before out ordinations were scheduled, so it was an anxious time.
We kind of envied folks whose dioceses guaranteed them a position.

When Peter Lee was our bishop, he wouldn’t permit ordination to the transitional diaconate without a call, either. Made for some angst among seniors in seminary who might have been late in getting calls. In our Virginia group that year one woman did not get called to a position until two days before our ordination. She did get ordained with us, but her name wasn’t in the announcements or the bulletin.
