I am here. For me it has been a time of great change. I retired from the
stipendiary ministry just a month ago and of course had to move home as
well - a major change after almost 21 years as rector of my 8 parishes
in the diocese of Derby (England). I now live in a bungalow in the
neighbouring county of Nottinghamshire (Diocese of Southwell &
Nottingham). The parish I live in is Keyworth which is a large village
to which are yoled the neighbouring small rural parishes of
Stanton-on-the-Wolds and Bunny. I hope in due course to take up some
retired ministry in the area - but the rule here is that retired clergy
are expected to take 6 months out of active ministry after retirement.
Life seems very strange with no rushing about taking services and it
will certainly take quite a time to adjust.
Listsibs may be interested to know that just up the road from me is the
village of Gotham - presumably the source of the name which passed on
somehow to Gotham City of Superman fame. This Gotham is however,
pronounced Goatham. Locally it is a place of which there are many tales
about the "Wise men of Gotham"
One tale is that the three wise men of Gotham found a cuckoo. They
wanted to keep it so they planted a bush round it to stop it leaving -
but the bird flew out from the top! The local pub is named "The Cuckoo Bush"
There is also a popular rhyme about them:
Three wise men of Gotham
went to sea in a bowl
Had the bowl been stronger
My tale would have been longer!
....
....
God bless
