My spouse, Wilfred[o], was born and raised on Saint Croix, USVI.  As 
all may recall, Hurricane Irma hit Saint Thomas and Saint John, USVI,  and
largely spared Saint Croix.  Then along came Maria (if I can keep  these
hurricane names straight), with a direct hit @ category 5 for Saint  Croix.
 
Wilfred's mother, sister, and brother still live on Saint Croix, and we had 
 no
word from them for over a week.  It turns out there is a radio ham  operator
(remember those?) in their neighborhood, and yesterday we got the  basic
report:  they are all all right.  Authorities are predicting that  it may 
take
SIX MONTHS before full power is restored to Saint Croix.
 
Other details, such as how well their home survived the storm, are not 
known at this time, but at least the relatives are all right.  Wilfred  was
at that location for Hugo, another category 5 storm some years ago.   They
have one reinforced concrete bedroom where all hunker down for the
worst of such storms.
