Lots of Canadians were recruited to come to New England
to replace the local millworkers. In part because they were
easier to control. The Catholic church was anti-union.

And under Quebec law, younger children generally didn’t inherit.
The eldest son got the whole kit&kaboodle, while many others
went into the church. There were families where younger sons
ended up as badly-paid employees of the eldest brother.

Of course, lots of the early English settlers came indentured.
Indentured immigration was replaced by enslaved Africans.
