I attended the local annual commemoration
honoring the Revolutionary War Battle of Wyoming
(July 3, 1778) last week. The fighters
were Loyalists and American Indian allies vs.
American Revolutionists, 300 of the former,
and a lesser number of the Loyalist/Indian group
were killed. The site is marked by an impressive
stone obelisk in a present day pleasant
suburb of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
My relatives may well have been fighting with
the Loyalists in this Battle. They were on the
eventual losing side, lost everything and
were banished to the Canadian Maritimes as
a result.
Do we honor/remember/commemorate or
just remember the Loyalist/Indian dead?
How about the US Confederates?
I don't have the answer.
