>>>The listening is great fun but this piece sounds almost
like the jazz precursor, rag-time. Those who know more about
jazz than I do (which is very little) may wish to set me
straight.<<<

No problem. This not ragtime, but early jazz. Which being translated is, early New Orleans jazz. Which, as you say, came from ragtime. But this is definitely not ragtime. It is jazz.

The generic pablum label is "Dixieland". The correct term is "traditional jazz". Marion, and maybe even Roger, will know exactly what I mean when I use the (admittely British) term "trad jazz".

M J (Mike) Logsdon, a "veteran" of the San Francisco traditional jazz revival, if only because I met so many of the originals of said movement, either before their death, or before they retired out of sight due to age. I have a photo on my living room wall of my 1997 meeting with Bob Helm, reed man of the Lu Watters Yerba Buena Jazz Band circa 1946-47, and later off and on with the Turk Murphy San Francisco Jazz Band (originally trombone for Lu). And, by the way, a belated Happy Turk Murphy Day (May 30, in San Francisco).
