Back in November, Joey was bleeding into his urine and we found out that he had a mass in his bladder. An anti-inflammatory was prescribed and we got to today when he started bleeding again.

It’s been a tough day and I’ve found myself crying a good bit. He’s been such a good dog, being my companion back in the days I could walk the trails here in the foothills and now in our old age lying in Camille’s lap as she lives with Alzheimer’s.

Joey’s deaf and blind but is finally getting along well with dogs in the small dogs dog park, sniffing and finally making acquaintances. He doesn’t show any signs of suffering, so I’m inclined to let things be for a little bit longer. However, I’m going to look for another small dog, even while he’s alive.

I think this is best for Camille and me even though I see myself as a bit callous and selfish not waiting until after Joey’s gone.

His 17th birthday is in May, which he’ll probably never see. Lord, I wish these faithful companions could live a bit longer.
