As Ms. Michaud said, no income tax in NH. We do have income tax in VT (& 
MA). Property taxes, OTOH, are much lower than in NH. Our property taxes 
here are (past tense in MA) ~$4K per year. In VT you get a rebate on 
property taxes if your taxable income is "lowish" - for us, it's ~$1000. In 
the town we lived in, in MA, a $20K property tax bill would mean property 
worth a million or so. While there are some towns in MA with lots of 
properties in that price range, ours certainly wasn't one of them.

As is well-known, in neighbo(u)ring New Hampshire there are no sales taxes 
of any kind. Which is why one finds a bunch of big box stores right across 
the river. OTOH, they do have a 9% meals and room tax to get all the 
tourists.

I just ordered some DVDs from Warner Archive (highly recommended for olden 
sorts like myself), and they actually broke down the taxes in a way I've 
never seen before.

After generic state tax, they did this:

CA COUNTY TAX
$0.13
CA CITY TAX
$0.87
CA SPECIAL TAX
$0.29
CA SPECIAL TAX
$0.58

Wha?  Has it always been that way?  Or are they just trying to make sure 
they're being transparent???
