In churches I serve, I try to get folks aware of need, and to do outreach
on local, diocesan, national, and international levels. I don’t see
anything wrong with collecting school supplies for kids in Africa. Perhaps
if someone else really cares enough, they will spearhead an effort on the
local level. The two campaigns could even be coordinated, with a “give
double,” side-by-side box, or Sunday School doing local and adult bible
study or youth group taking on the international outreach effort. If you’re
buying one box of crayons, why not buy two?
