Leica AG (camera business) came close to closing fifteen or twenty years ago. Moving into the digital market saved them, I think. Even now, the logo is owned by Leica Systems which makes laboratory equipment, geological testing and measuring equipment, etc. Leica AG pays Leica Systems for its use.
I now own four Leicas - all digital: V-Lux (actually made by Panasonic with Leica glass and firmware), M10 (rangefinder - M stands for Messsucher), SL (mirrorless) and S (medium format SLR). Best photographic lenses available.
And BTW, film photography is coming back strong.
