It was interesting to have lived in Europe before the Europeans really
discovered the automobile.  Yes, of course there were cars, and therewere the autobahn equivalents in all European countries, but cars weremore of a luxury item in the 1960's  This meant far less traffic, and easyparkability.  For instance, I can recall driving from the Connaught toWestminster Abbey and parking next to the church for their AdventL&C, driving up to Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome, and parking in the"welcoming arms" colonnade to tour the church.  Ditto for the RomanColiseum, etc.
Now the same trips and visited areas are either clogged with trafficor closed to automobiles.
